Song Named After a Girl

by Brian Hazard on July 27, 2010 · View Comments

“Song Named After a Girl” is the opening track from my new album, The Sound. A few months back, I was driving along to Iron & Wine’s “Jezebel,” and pondering what a different flavor it would have if the subject’s name was Judy or Jennifer. That led to mentally cataloging every other like-named song I could recall, from the Beatles’ “Michelle” to Toto’s “Roseanna” (another Brian does a better job). I wondered what name I’d choose, and decided the world doesn’t need another song named after a girl. For better or worse, it got this.

I invite you to to download and share the song (you may have to right-click the link and select “Save As”). It’s yours for the taking, no strings attached.

A free album download to the first person to identify the song in the manuscript above!

I sing a timeless story
The song about a girl
A tale of tragic glory
To captivate the world
I don’t want to award you any undue fame
So the star of this lyric doesn’t have a name

I want to laugh it off but
This isn’t a game
I want to write a song and
Sing it in your name but
Who cares? I’ll recover

I want to rip my heart out
Throw it on the ground
I want to scream your name out
Just to hear the sound but
Who needs another
Song named after a girl

The plot line is a classic
Been done a million times
But never so sarcastic
With such ironic rhymes
So I hope I get bonus points for novelty
When you calculate all the time you wasted on me.

Have you scream her name out?
Have you hear the sound? And the silence after that?…
This song is the best thing after this silence.

    GREAT!

Great song Brian. The music is perfect and the lyrics are great. Is it 8/4 yet?

A great Song Brian :D Like your Voice and Sound!!! Unfortunately, do I not have to be able to buy the money around your great new album, but maybe can you let me the songs as a MP3 come up anyhow? Dignity me, in any case, please very much ;) Lots of love and furthermore a lot occur with your projects!

He forgot one of my favorites of that class, “Kayleigh.” :)

This sounds great with the vocals. Very witty! I don’t recall many songs that sing about themselves, so this is original in that way too.

The chorus has “in your name” instead of “with your name” as in the lyrics, and I think it flows more naturally that way which must be why it came out like that.

Too bad I don’t know how to read music. Now I’m curious.

    Thanks for the kind words!

@René – All you have to do is ID the song in the manuscript! ;) I don’t plan to post the other album tracks this way, but I’m sure they will be streaming in the usual places sooner or later.

@Guy – Thanks for catching that! Fortunately, it’s correct in the print for the CDs. As you gleaned, it’s just how I sang it. I often change the words around unintentionally during recording.

I love it! I can’t wait to get the CD.

so beautiful. lyrics like this really make me stop whatever im doing and listen with a heavy heart.

  • Caius

The song in the picture is killing me. I feel like I must know it.

  • Caius

    GOT IT! “Like Clockwork.”

I could have sworn I recognized it, but it was bothering me so I went through all your albums to see if any song names rang a bell. I found it when I listened to a couple of songs I didn’t already know.

Pretty little piano song, by the way.

DING DING DING! We have a winner!

Great job Caius! It was made trickier by the fact that the manuscript is from the middle of the song, not the beginning. I don’t typically chart out my music, but the piece was too involved for me to record entirely from memory. Please shoot me an email and let me know what album you’d like to download, and I’ll send you a code to use at music.colortheory.com.

If anyone wants to verify, you can stream the whole thing here. Also, if you create a stretching routine at Stretch Secretary with background music, Like Clockwork will soothe and loosen your muscles. Not bad for little piano piece!

Love this song, great textures. The reversed instrumentals work very well. Interesting lyrics too. Like the shape and direction your music is heading.
