Color Theory
The Silence + Second Thoughts

The Silence + Second Thoughts combines two digital-only EPs into an extremely limited edition physical CD. There are only 300 copies worldwide, 200 of which have already been sold (more on that later), making it an instant collector’s edition. The CD features 7 Color Theory originals plus 10 remixes of songs from my latest two albums, The Sound and The Thought Chapter.

In addition to the CD, limited edition high quality t-shirts with the album artwork on the front will be available until the CDs sell out. At that point, one shirt order will be placed with the silkscreening company, after which these shirts will not be made available again.

UPDATE: The CD is sold out, but both EPs are still available for download:

The Silence and Second Thoughts

I know this release comes as a surprise to many of you! I’ll try answer the questions I can predict. Hit me up with your thoughts in the comments.

You said there wouldn’t be a physical release. What changed?

I wasn’t willing to lose money on it, but Todd Durrant of A Different Drum offered to release the double EP on his label. I only had to pay for graphic design.

How are 200 copies already sold when you haven’t even started taking orders?

That’s the genius of A Different Drum’s VIP Club. There are only 200 slots available, and all subscribers receive a limited edition CD every month. ADD presses 300 units of each VIP release – 200 for the subscribers, 100 for the artist.

Those EPs are pretty long. Do the tracks all fit on one CD?

Five were cut: We’re Not Getting Any Younger (Fidgital Remix), Figured Out (Blind Faith and Envy Remix), Two (Radio Edit), It Must Be Halloween (Lars Hausmann Remix), and A Safe Distance (Lightning Over Oceans Orchestral Mix).

Why does the price say “or more”?

Fans that want to offer a higher level of support can choose to pay more than the $15 minimum. Besides a 15% cut to Bandcamp and Paypal transaction fees, all money goes directly to the artist. Your financial support allows me to make new music. I may end up losing money on the t-shirts, but I’m okay with that since many of you have been asking about shirts for a long time!

WhiteShark (aka Vick BE) made a delightfully fun video for “The Rule of Tickles (Leadboy Remix).” I love the way different elements overlap, and how they all pump in time with the song. You can watch it here.

Thank you Vick! And thanks again to Leadboy for a great remix. You can hear the original version and read the lyrics here.

A few years ago, German band Any Colour You Like recorded a studio demo of my song “Numb.” I heard it for the first time last week. What do you think? You can read the lyrics and hear my original version here.

You may or may not have noticed a new navigation option at the top of the page: work in progress. While I’ve got one last surprise in store for you relating to my latest album, I’ve officially begun working on new material. The “work in progress” page will detail my weekly focus and daily efforts. There won’t be any long explanations unless you ask for them, so throw some questions at me in the comments!

Last week I showed you how to play “A Safe Distance” on the piano. Franco Girardi enhanced that footage to give my playing the full “Billy Jean” treatment in a fantastic new lyric video.

What do you think? Also be sure to check out Franco’s video for “Two (Radio Edit)” here.

Ever wonder how to play the piano part from “A Safe Distance”? Well, here it is anyway…

Franco Girardi created an amazing video for “Two (Radio Edit).” It starts out strong and then gets even better. Watch it here.

Between The Silence and the four other remixes I shared with you in January, you’ve heard The Sound reimagined several different ways. In fact, every song from the album was remixed at least once – some as many as three times! Today I present the last of them, available for free download for one week only.

Many of you had great things to say about Leadboy’s “The Rule of Tickles” remix. Here’s his interpretation of “Song Named After a Girl,” followed by “Too Close” remixed by formative.

EDIT 2/8/11: The week is past, and the downloads have been removed. Perhaps they’ll resurface someday!

Finally, here’s another remix of “Song Named After a Girl” by Roaming Royalty and a somewhat bizarre version of “Waiting in the Wings” by TB6 (is this hip hop?). Both have taken up semi-permanent residency on the you page.

Waiting in the Wings (TB6 Remake)

Seeing as we’ve run out of remixes, I guess I’d better record some new music!

Guess what the #1 search engine for music is. iTunes? Last.fm? Google? Nope, it’s YouTube!

I finally got around to making lyric videos for each of the songs from my latest album, The Sound. Here they are in one tidy playlist. For the best quality sound, select 720p or 1080p from the drop-down menu (that advice applies to all YouTube videos, by the way!).

They all have the same basic look and feel, but “It Must Be Halloween” and “Extroverts at Play” were injected with a slight dose of melodrama.

Should I do The Thought Chapter too? My Depeche Mode tribute would probably get the most plays.

Post image for Color Theory featured on Windows Media Guide

I had a happy observation this morning. I noticed I’d been getting a thousand or so downloads a day of “A Safe Distance,” but I had no idea why. Eventually I put two and two together, and remembered that I’d been approached for a Windows Media Guide opportunity a month or so ago. I’m not sure how long it’ll be up, but for the time being you can download the song for free – no email address required. Just click on the doe-faced stare guy and you’ll be good to go.
