Lyric check: Extroverts at Play

by Brian Hazard on May 19, 2010 · View Comments

This one comes from the Swing Vampires snippet. It came out a little jazzier than I anticipated! It was supposed to be called Pretend Extroverts but that particular phrase never wrote itself into the lyric. Clearly Extroverts at Play makes more sense with this lyric, but is it a better title?

As always, I welcome your thoughts and suggestions. Anything confusing or contradictory? What’s the weakest part? The strongest? Before you suggest a word-for-word substitution, try singing along with the player below to make sure it fits. You’ll notice the second verse doesn’t scan perfectly because the rhyme isn’t always at the end of the line.

Extroverts at Play
©2010 Brian Hazard (ASCAP)

They don’t know what they believe
So we stare and nod as they think out loud
Trying our best to fit in
As we fight for breath in this stifling crowd
And the time races by when you’re having some fun
But it’s plodding along now at quarter to one
As the night tries our patience we’re hitting a wall
I sneak off to the side like I’m taking a call to observe

Extroverts at play
Egos run amuck
I’d like them well enough
If they would just shut up
But we will persevere
By sheer force of will
We’ll stoically endure
This social overkill

Maybe someday this will
Come to us more naturally but
Until then we’ll have to pretend

Tomorrow we’ll take the whole day
To recuperate in a private place
Sleeping or reading a book
Our resilience now is our saving grace
So just try to imagine, it’s not such a stretch
I’m the life of the party and it is the death of me
Here in my eyes you’re the belle of the ball
With the hint of a smile you enchant more than all of the…

We’ll hone our acting skills
Fake it ’til we make it baby
Until then we’ll have to pretend

It doesn’t have to be in the lyrics to be the title. Think about most New Order songs. Heh, might be fun to title it something like, “Playing at Extraversion.”

“Pretend Extroverts” is still a suitable title as I take it they’re all pretend extroverts? Nobody there is comfortable.

I like the line “I’m the life of the party and it is the death of me.”

This will sound incredible. Don’t remember if I said that when you just gave the music sample, but the meter and scansion you have for the lyrics just goes great with it, I kept rocking my shoulders listening to it.

Brian, this is just the right amount of tongue in cheek. I like it when you sneak off to pretend to take a call. The only weak part is “sheer force of will” — I just sang that cliche last night in someone else’s song I was learning….I think “will” can stay for the rhyme, like “the strength of our will” or something. But that’s small potatoes. I probably wouldn’t have even noticed if it weren’t in Richie’s song.

    Great feedback – thanks!

While New Order got away with naming their songs randomly, I believe it worked against them. I think it’s important to know what the title of a song is from hearing it. And really, isn’t “Every Time I See You Falling” a better title than “Bizarre Love Triangle”?

Actually, the original original title was “Pretending to Be Extroverts.” The more time passes, the better I feel about “Extroverts at Play.”

Britt, to me at least, “sheer force of will” isn’t cliché at all. “Fake it ’til we make it” on the other hand… ;)

OK, the song is done! I changed “not so far-fetched” to “not such a stretch.” That wasn’t any conscious choice on my part – I just sang it that way!

Hehe, yeah that makes sense… whenever I try to sing “Touch” the line “Apologies that won’t take the blame” comes out “Apologies that won’t accept blame.”

I’m not even entirely sure that’s the meaning you intended for it (could have been “take away/negate the blame.”)

That is indeed what I meant! Your wording is more accurate, but a little unnatural to sing.

Just for the record, I can’t stop humming this song! The bridges (“Maybe someday this will …”) are absolutely lovely in their jazziness, and the verse melody is so catchy it hurts. :)

I know you’ve already recorded the song, which is why I’m only giving praise here … then again, I couldn’t come up with any bad things to say if I tried. I love this song!

Thanks Erika! I’m rendering what might be the final mix as I type this. I’m really excited for you to hear it, but I need to focus on wrapping up the other tracks! I’m planning to rework two or three that aren’t happening for me just yet.
